79 percent respondents in Lokniti-CSDS study say India belongs to all religions
An overwhelming majority of respondents to the Center for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS) and Lokniti’s Pre-Poll Study 2024 – 79 per cent – say they believe “India belongs to all religions equally, not just Only of Hindus”. a report by Scroll.in,
The survey, which included 10,019 respondents, was conducted in 19 states between March 28 and April 8 and found support for religious pluralism. Only 11 percent of respondents said they believed “India belongs only to Hindus”, while nearly eight out of every 10 Hindus spoke in favor of religious pluralism. scroll The report said.
The survey comes in the backdrop of a recent circular by the Gujarat Home Department, which states that Hindus in Gujarat who want to convert to Buddhism, Jainism or Sikhism will have to seek prior approval from the District Magistrate under the Gujarat Freedom of Religion Act. would be required, as reported in various media outlets on April 10.
The circular specified that Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism are separate from Hinduism as per the Act, and claimed that district magistrates were not processing applications for conversion to Buddhism in compliance with the Act.
The Lokniti-CSDS study also shows that public trust in the Election Commission of India (ECI) is declining among respondents, with 28 percent saying they trusted the Election Commission “to a great extent” and 30 percent Opted to reduce “somewhat”.
