Delhi government’s demand for additional water: UYRB emergency meeting today
With Delhi grappling with a water crisis amid scorching heat, the Supreme Court on Monday ordered an emergency meeting of the Upper Yamuna River Board (UYRB) on Wednesday, June 5, to consider the issue. The UYRB was set up in 1995 and one of its main functions is to regulate the allocation of available flows among beneficiary states and to monitor and review the progress of all projects, including the Okhla barrage in Delhi. These states include Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi.
“Why can’t there be a joint meeting of all the stakeholders?” the vacation bench of Justices PK Mishra and KV Vishwanathan initially asked. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre and Haryana governments, said the issue was already being considered by the UYRB, in which all the stakeholder states, including Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi, are parties.
