Congress hopes the government will stop resorting to ‘such mischievous ideas’
Congress welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision on Thursday striking down the electoral bond scheme and said it would strengthen the power of voting on notes.
The opposition party also said it hoped the Modi government would stop resorting to such “mischievous ideas” in future and listen to the Supreme Court so that democracy, transparency and level playing field are maintained.
In a landmark judgment, the Supreme Court has dealt a major blow to the government and struck down the electoral bond scheme for political funding, saying it violates the constitutional right to freedom of speech and expression as well as the right to information.
In a post on Twitter, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision and hoped that the government would stop resorting to “such mischievous ideas” in future.
He said that when the scheme was launched, the Congress had described it as “opaque and undemocratic”. Subsequently, in the 2019 manifesto, Congress promised to end the “dubious scheme” of the Modi government.
“We welcome the Supreme Court’s decision today, which has struck down the Modi government’s ‘black money conversion’ scheme as ‘unconstitutional’.
Kharge said, “We remember how the Modi government, PMO and FM had put pressure on every institution – RBI, Election Commission, Parliament and the opposition – to fill the BJP’s coffers. No wonder 95% under this scheme The funding was given to BJP.” ,
The Congress chief said, “We hope that the Modi government will stop resorting to such mischievous ideas in future and will listen to the Supreme Court, so that democracy, transparency and level playing field prevail.”
Reacting to the decision, former Congress President Rahul Gandhi said, “Another proof of Narendra Modi’s corrupt policies is in front of you.” BJP had made electoral bonds a medium for taking bribe and commission. Today it has been approved.”
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “The Supreme Court has held the much-publicized electoral bond scheme of the Modi government to be a violation of both the laws passed by Parliament as well as the Constitution of India.”
The long-awaited decision is extremely welcome and will strengthen the voting power on the notes, he said on Twitter.
Ramesh said, “Modi government is committing any kind of atrocities on the donors while giving privileges to the donors.”
“We also hope that the Supreme Court will take note of the fact that the Election Commission is consistently refusing to even meet political parties on the issue of Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT). If everything is transparent in the voting process, it would Why the stubbornness?” He said.
Party spokesperson Pawan Khera said at a press conference here that Congress has been fighting this battle inside and outside Parliament for the last seven years and its stand has been proved right.
“We welcome the decision of the Honorable Supreme Court,” he told reporters.
Kheda said, “We are grateful to the Supreme Court of India. We, as a nation, are strengthened and encouraged.” “Today, we have been proven right,” he said.
Kheda alleged that the electoral bonds were “a deliberate device of concealment, leading to complete immunity from political accountability”.
He said that this was his only objective and all intellectuals presented at that time have failed to withstand judicial scrutiny.
“For a party that made cleaning up ‘black money’ a key slogan of its election campaigns, it created a system that removed all accountability from the system, giving black money a cloak to hide itself, with And also imposed a fee on the citizens of this country to run it,” he said.
Kheda said the party expects SBI to disclose all details of funding received by all political parties and publish the same in compliance with the ECI Supreme Court directions.
“Since its implementation, more than 95 per cent of funding has gone to just one party through this route, raising the question whether the Modi government will follow suit or issue another ordinance to circumvent the instructions Supreme Court“Khera asked.
Khera alleged that in the light of the verdict, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “corruption” has been “exposed”.
The Congress leader claimed, “This is a case of Prime Minister’s corruption which was tried to be hidden legally by bringing Money Bill.”
He claimed that the government has a habit of resorting to ordinances to get its point across and said that after the verdict, no attempt should be made to bring back electoral bonds through the backdoor.
Asked whether the party would demand a probe into donations received by the BJP through bonds, Kheda said, “I think this is such a serious matter that one should bow down. Who is behind this scheme that all tracks are being laid?” Which ensures a completely opaque system of political funding. Accountability must be fixed. The country must know who is behind this corruption and we all know who is behind this corruption.”
Senior Congress leader and former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram also praised the decision, saying it was a major victory for transparency, right to know and level playing field in elections.
In its judgment a few months before the Lok Sabha elections, the apex court had ordered SBI to disclose to the Election Commission the names of contributors to the six-year-old scheme.
