Congress won four out of six seats in Himachal Assembly by-election

Promoting the Congress government Himachal PradeshThe party won four of the six assembly by-elections held on Tuesday.

The results are a boost for the Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu government, which was facing a threat after cross-voting by six party MLAs in the Rajya Sabha by-elections.

These MLAs who were disqualified from the assembly later joined the BJP. Due to disqualification, by-elections were held on six seats.

Himachal Pradesh Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania on Monday accepted the resignations of three independent MLAs who had joined hands with rebel Congress MLAs and voted in favour of the BJP candidate in the Rajya Sabha elections. Congress candidate Abhishek Manu Singhvi lost the Rajya Sabha elections, causing embarrassment to the Congress.

The Congress has 34 MLAs in the Assembly and after four of its candidates won the by-elections, the party’s strength in the 68-member House has now gone up to 38. With three vacancies, the effective strength of the Assembly is 65 and the majority figure is 33.

In the 2022 assembly elections, the Congress had won 40 seats while the BJP had got 25 seats.

In Dharamshala Assembly constituency, BJP candidate Sudhir Sharma secured 28,066 votes defeating his nearest rival Devendra Singh Jaggi of the Congress who got 22,540 votes. Independent candidate Rakesh Chaudhary got 10,770 votes while Satish Kumar got 422 votes.

Congress candidate from Lahaul-Spiti Anuradha Rana won 9,414 votes defeating her nearest rival independent candidate Ram Lal Markanda who got 7,454 votes. BJP candidate Ravi Thakur got 3049 votes.

Congress candidate from Sujanpur Captain Ranjit Singh Rana secured 29,529 votes defeating his nearest rival BJP’s Rajendra Singh Rana who got 27,089 votes. Nationalist Congress Party’s Ravinder Singh Dogra got 334 votes. Independent candidate Anil Rana got 134 votes, Sher Singh got 71 votes and Rajesh Kumar got 46 votes.

Congress candidate Vivek Sharma from Kutlahar won 35,728 votes defeating his nearest rival BJP’s Devendra Kumar Bhutto who got 30,841 votes. Independent candidate Chanchal Singh got 290 votes and Rajiv Sharma got 228 votes.

In Gagret, Congress candidate Rakesh Kalia won 35,768 votes defeating his nearest rival BJP’s Chaitanya Sharma who got 27,281 votes. Independent candidates Amit Vashisht, Ashok Sonkhla and Manohar Lal Sharma got 570, 323 and 288 votes respectively.

BJP’s Indra Dutt Lakhanpal from Barsar got 33,086 votes and defeated his nearest rival Subhash Chand. Congress He got 30,961 votes. Independent candidate Vishal Kumar got 452 votes.

Voting for six assembly seats of Himachal Pradesh was held on June 1 in the seventh and final phase.
