Fire breaks out in slum in Bhayandar near Mumbai; at least 1 dead

One person has died after a massive fire broke out in a slum in Bhayandar in Maharashtra’s Thane district, neighboring Mumbai, on the morning of Wednesday, February 28, destroying several huts and shops, officials said.

He said that three people were injured in the fire.

Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) Commissioner Sanjay Katkar said the incident occurred at around 5 am in the Azad Nagar slum.

Katkar, who was supervising the rescue and relief operations at the site, said that people living in huts and other residents of the area ran out of their homes after the fire.

According to sources, some explosions were heard in the area.
