How to Use Bitwarden Send to Securely Share Passwords

If you have a document or text with secret or sensitive information that you want to keep private but still want to share with someone, try Bitwarden Send.

Have you ever had a document with sensitive information that you had to share with someone, such as a tax document, contract, application, assignment, or will? The document may contain important personal data like your Social Security number or bank account details. If any unauthorized person gets hold of it, it can have serious consequences. However, if you find yourself in a situation where you need to send a document, you’ve probably emailed it, thinking it’s the safest option.

No. It’s not like that.

Emails can be intercepted. If it is not encrypted, anyone can read it easily. When sending sensitive data, it is essential to use a secure method of transmission. You can use Bitwarden Password Manager, which has Bitwarden Send feature.

Bitwarden Send is a secure way to send files or text. It encrypts the information and allows access only to those with the link. Even better, you can set up sending features here:

  1. It is available for limited days.
  2. can be finished in X days
  3. You can access it only X times.
  4. You can add an extra layer of security by using a password.
  5. You can hide your email address from recipients.

You can attach any file type to Send, such as documents, spreadsheets, images, videos, text files, databases, etc. The file size limit is 500 MB.

How to use Bitwarden Send

To get started, you only need three things:

  • Bitwarden app (which includes Bitwarden Send).
  • A valid Bitwarden account.
  • The file you want to send.

I will show you how to use the Bitwarden desktop app.

1. Log in to your Bitwarden Vault

To get started, open the Bitwarden app and login to your vault. After logging in, you will find the send icon on the bottom left.

2. Create a new send

To create a new send, click the send icon and then click +.

3. Attach your file

Attach your file to Bitwarden

In the new window, enter a name in the Send field, select a file, and click Choose File. To attach a file, open the file picker and select the file you want to send. Then, click “Select” or “Open” (depending on your operating system).

4. Configure Send

To open Send Configuration, expand the Options section. To customize, you must adjust the following options:

1. The deletion date is the day the send will be permanently deleted. You can choose a period from 1 to 30 days, or you can choose a specific date.

2. The expiration date occurs when the link becomes invalid and can no longer be used to access the file.

3. The maximum access number refers to the amount of time you can access the send feature before the file becomes unavailable.

4. Passwords are an extra layer of security you can choose to add to your sends. This is optional but highly recommended.

5. Notes are a place to add additional information.

6. When you hide your email address from recipients, they won’t be able to see it when they view the message you sent.

7. To make Send inaccessible to anyone except you, deactivate it without deleting it.

8. Please provide link to share. This feature lets you instantly copy the link to your desktop clipboard for easy sharing.

After setting send, click on the save icon. Once you’ve saved your message, you’ll find it listed in the middle pane. To copy the link, remove the password (if added), or delete the send, right-click the listing.

Configure Bitwarden Send

Once you’ve copied the send link, you can easily send it via email, SMS, Slack DM, or any other method of your choice. I suggest adding a password to the link you send, especially if you use an insecure method. To keep things safe, it’s best to send the password separate from the link. For example, you can send passwords via SMS, Slack, or even a phone call instead of emailing the send link.
