Hunter Biden’s ex-wife testifies in his federal gun trial

Hunter Biden’s ex-wife and ex-girlfriend testified at his gun trial on Wednesday that they had found his crack pipes and other drug paraphernalia, as prosecutors sought to show he still had substance abuse problems when he filled out forms to buy guns.

Silence fell in the courtroom when Kathleen Buhle, who had been married to Hunter for 20 years, came in. She testified that she discovered her husband was using drugs when she found a crack pipe in an ashtray on their porch, the day after their wedding anniversary on July 3, 2015. When she asked him, “he admitted to smoking crack,” she said.

The trial has quickly become a highly personal and detailed tour of Hunter Biden’s missteps and drug use. The proceedings are unfolding as the 2024 presidential election approaches, and aides are concerned about the impact it will have on the president, who is deeply concerned about the health and continued sobriety of his only surviving son. Prosecutors argue the testimony is necessary to show Hunter Biden’s mental state when he purchased the gun.

Hunter Biden has been charged with three felonies related to his gun purchase in October 2018. He is accused of lying to a federally licensed gun dealer, falsely claiming on an application that he was not a drug user and illegally possessing a gun for 11 days.

Buhle suspected Hunter was using cocaine before the drugs were found, as he had previously been kicked out of the Navy after testing positive for cocaine.

“I was definitely anxious and scared,” she said. She has three children and divorced in 2016 after her husband’s infidelity and drug abuse became too much, as detailed in her memoir “If We Break” about the dissolution of their marriage.
