Indian-origin doctor found guilty of sexually assaulting patients in England
Mohan Babu, a 47-year-old Indian-origin family doctor in southeast England, has been convicted of sexually assaulting three women under his care. One of these victims is suffering from cancer.
Babu, a former general practitioner at Staunton Surgery in Havant, Hampshire, has been found guilty of four counts of sexual assault following a recent hearing at Portsmouth Crown Court.
Babu, who worked with his wife, who was a general practitioner at the same clinic, was released on conditional bail on April 12 pending sentencing, according to digital news portal The News.
The court heard the sexual assaults took place between September 2019 and July 2021, with the youngest victim a 19-year-old woman. The attacks took place on the premises of Staunton Surgery, where Babu worked.
During the trial, it was revealed that several complaints had been filed against Babu regarding his conduct, which included inappropriate touching and making “creepy” comments to patients.
While five other women, including a receptionist at the clinic, complained about his behaviour, criminal proceedings were not initiated based on their complaints.
Prosecutor Miranda Moore Casey told how Babu targeted “vulnerable” women after joining the surgery as a locum doctor in April 2018.
The first complaint about Babu’s actions was made in August 2019, about 16 months after he joined on the recommendation of his wife. Then, another complaint came soon after.
Babu had been warned several times about his behavior before these incidents.
Moore described how Babu abused his job by performing unnecessary tests, saying inappropriate things, and even hurting patients.
A patient suffering from terminal pancreatic cancer said that Babu behaved badly during their interactions from May to August 2019.
Following public complaints, Babu stopped working at Staunton Surgery in July 2021. Even though he said he did nothing wrong, he was found guilty on four counts of sexual assault against three women. But he was found not guilty in three more cases involving two other women.
