Lok Sabha election results: Memes abound as BJP’s ‘Abki baar 400 paar’ campaign fails, India Block leads
Counting of votes for 542 Lok Sabha seats began on June 4, with the BJP-led NDA leading in around 285 seats by noon, while the India Bloc was ahead in over 237 seats. These results are contrary to most exit polls, which had projected a clear victory for the saffron party-led National Democratic Alliance.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the BJP’s “Abki Baar 400 Paar” campaign and set a target of touching the 400 mark. However, things are looking quite different for the ruling party, as India has proved most post-poll analyses wrong.
The biggest setback for BJP has come from Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. In Uttar Pradesh, the coalition government of Samajwadi Party (SP) and Indian National Congress is leading on 42 out of 80 seats.
In West Bengal, while most exit polls had indicated more than 30 seats in favour of the BJP and around 10 seats for Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC), the result turned out to be the opposite. As per the latest updates, TMC is leading on 33 seats and BJP on 9 out of 42 seats.
In Bihar, Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) (JDU) is getting better results than BJP.
A social media user wrote, “If BJP does not cross the 272 mark on its own, the NDA government will become very unstable. People like Nitish and Naidu cannot be trusted. All Indi has to do is say, ‘Nitish ji, come, we will make you PM’ and he will run away without looking back. Maybe he is already sitting in the Congress headquarters.”
Meanwhile, social media users are sharing memes to react to the results. One of the surprising results for the BJP came from the Faizabad Lok Sabha constituency, where Ayodhya is located. While the Ram temple inauguration became a high-profile occasion for the ruling party ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, SP’s Awadhesh Prasad is leading in the constituency.
In Punjab, BJP is not leading on any seat, while the contest is between Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Out of a total of 13 seats, Congress is leading on 7 seats, while AAP is leading on 3 seats.
