New Delhi:

Former US First Lady Michelle Obama is the leading choice to replace President Joe Biden as the Democratic Party’s nominee for president, a poll has revealed.

Nearly half of Democrats – who voted in the Rasmussen Reports poll – expressed their preference for someone other than Biden to contest the US presidential election.

About 48% of Democratic voters surveyed said they approve of the party “finding another candidate to replace Joe Biden before the November election”, while 38% disapproved.

Only 33 percent of Democrats believe the vote will change.

Among other choices to replace 81-year-old Joe Biden, Michelle Obama received about 20 percent of the vote. Other contenders were Vice President Kamala Harris, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, California Governor Gavin Newsom and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

Kamala Harris received about 15 percent of the vote, while 12 percent supported a rematch between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.

Michelle Obama is being repeatedly called upon to consider running for president.

Obama last month expressed deep fear about the upcoming election, saying it “troubles” him. “The fact that people think the government—’Eh, does it actually do anything?’ – And I say, ‘Oh my God, does the government do everything for us, and we can’t take this democracy for granted.’ And I worry sometimes that we do that. Those are the things that keep me going,” she said.

The lineup in the 2024 US election was long a foregone conclusion, with a rematch between Joe Biden and Donald Trump looking almost certain.

Biden claims he is the most qualified candidate, despite polls that indicate his age is troubling voters.

Trump, meanwhile, is insisting he will run for re-election despite a possible criminal conviction that could theoretically see him spend decades in prison.
