Modi to be sworn in on June 8, Cabinet recommends dissolution of 17th Lok Sabha
The Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday recommended that the 17th Lok Sabha, whose term ends on June 16, be dissolved.
According to sources, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Janata Dal-United (JDU) have pledged their support after the 2024 Lok Sabha election results, the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the formation of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) administration is expected to take place on June 8. Both parties are expected to present formal letters of support at the alliance convention, reports ANI.
According to reports, the Election Commission of India has announced the Lok Sabha Election Results 2024 for 542 out of 543 constituencies, with the BJP winning 240 seats and the Congress 99. This is a drop from the BJP’s 303 seats in 2019 and 282 in 2014. In contrast, the Congress saw a tremendous rise, winning 99 members, up from 52 in 2019 and 44 in 2014.
The report said the Bharat bloc crossed 230 votes, leading to a tough contest and surprising exit poll projections.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has won a third term, but the BJP will need the support of other alliance parties, including JD(U) president Nitish Kumar and TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu. After counting of votes for Lok Sabha Election Results 2024, the BJP fell 32 seats short of the majority mark of 272. This is the first time since 2014 that the BJP has not got a majority on its own, ANI reported.
According to news agency reports, NDA leaders are scheduled to hold a meeting at Prime Minister Modi’s residence today. The opposition party India Group will also meet today, where Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge will invite alliance leaders to his home. The India Group leaders will plan their next course of action after the successful results of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
On Tuesday, PM Modi thanked the people for their vote and announced that the BJP-led NDA will form the government for the third consecutive time. He termed the 2024 Lok Sabha election results as a victory of the people’s firm faith in the Constitution of India, the desire for a developed India, ‘Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas’, the report said.
In his address at the BJP headquarters on Tuesday, Prime Minister Modi said, “On this auspicious day, it has been confirmed that the NDA is forming the government for the third time. We are grateful to the people, they have shown full faith in the BJP and the NDA. This is the victory of the world’s largest democracy, this is the victory of firm belief in the Constitution of India, this is the victory of the resolve for a developed India. This is the victory of ‘Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas’.”
