Islamabad: Weeks after the results of the Pakistan parliamentary election were declared, the Pakistan Muslim League (N) (PML-N), headed by three-time former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, on Wednesday formally elected its youth, leaving Shehbaz Sharif a Ready to become Prime Minister again. The high-level meeting of PML-N party was held in Islamabad under the leadership of party supremo 74-year-old Nawaz Sharif.
According to a PTI report, Shahbaz led the coalition government for 16 months till August 2023 before a caretaker government took over after the announcement of general elections.
Nawaz officially nominated his younger brother Shehbaz Sharif and party loyalist Sardar Ayaz Sadiq for the posts of Prime Minister and Speaker of the National Assembly. PML-N central deputy secretary Ataullah Tarar said in a statement that the parliamentary party supported Shehbaz’s name and expressed full confidence in Nawaz’s leadership.
However, Nawaz Sharif’s selection of Shehbaz Sharif for the next PM post has surprised many within and outside the party as Nawaz himself was eyeing the post for a record fourth time.
The elder Nawaz said that his younger brother Shehbaz Sharif is the best choice for the post of Prime Minister, especially in the current circumstances of Pakistan.
He praised the cricketer-turned-politician and Shehbaz’s performance as PM during the Pakistan Democratic Movement’s tenure after former Prime Minister Imran Khan was ousted from power.
Nawaz Sharif reportedly said, “The way he prevented the country from defaulting is unprecedented.” He expressed hope that Pakistan will come out of the current crises in the next one or two years.
Nawaz said, “Pakistan is very injured at this time and we have to heal its wounds.”
Nawaz Sharif further said, “We have to take the country out of these difficulties and I believe that in the next two years we will have to take difficult decisions… but if your intentions are good then God will definitely help you.” ‘ according to the report.
Meanwhile, outgoing National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf on Thursday addressed the National Assembly after President Dr Arif Alvi, considered close to jailed Imran Khan and his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, refused to do so. A session has been called. ,
Khan’s PTI-backed independents have emerged as the biggest winners, followed by PML-N and PPP. However, Imran Khan has alleged that the February 8 elections were the most controversial and rigged elections in the country’s history.
He accused the PML-N-Pakistan People’s Party post-poll alliance, which also includes four other parties, of being “mandate thieves” to form the government at the Centre.
According to the Constitution, to form the government, a party must win 133 of the 265 seats contested in the 266-member National Assembly. Independent candidates – the majority backed by 71-year-old Khan’s PTI party – won 93 National Assembly seats. PML-N won 75 seats while PPP stood third with 54 seats. Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) has 17 seats.
As part of the PML-N-PPP coalition deal, it was decided that Nawaz Sharif’s daughter Maryam Nawaz would be the Chief Minister of Punjab province. Nawaz’s political successor Maryam took oath on Monday and became the first woman chief minister of any province in the country.
The second part of the agreement was that senior PPP leader former Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari would get the presidency.
