Pakistani Army launches fresh action against leaders of Imran Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
New Delhi: A fresh crackdown led by the Pakistan Army has reportedly been launched against jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party, with the aim of imposing its military-backed bias on the winners of recent elections, news agency PTI reported. PTI quoted its sources as saying that police have arrested independent candidates supported by PTI and raided their properties across Punjab province. Arrest warrants have also been issued for PTI-backed candidates nominated for the post of chief minister in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
Additionally, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has summoned Imran Khan’s sister Alima Khan on charges of inciting the public against the state, PTI reported.
PTI’s prime ministerial candidate Omar Ayub secured pre-arrest bail from a local court to prevent possible arrest in any unexpected case, preventing him from participating in parliamentary proceedings. The move was seen as a strategy to counter Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz candidate Shehbaz Sharif in the race for prime minister.
Citing intelligence agencies, Omar said that PTI-backed MNA (Member of the National Assembly) Aslam Ghumman from Sialkot has been kidnapped by unknown people. “Ghumman is being forced to leave PTI and join PML-N. In Lahore, police arrested Ahmed Rasheed Bhatti, a PTI-backed Member of Provincial Assembly (MPA) elected from Raiwind, in connection with riot cases on May 9. The police action took place when PTI was celebrating Bhatti’s victory at his residence. During the unprecedented violence following Khan’s arrest in a corruption case on May 9 last year, several PTI workers set fire to and vandalized several military and state establishments, including the army headquarters in Rawalpindi and the ISI building in Faisalabad.
Similarly, Punjab Police raided factories, mills and warehouses of PTI-backed MNA-elect Mobeen Arif Jatt and Ehsanullah Virk from Gujranwala and sealed their properties.
New warrants were issued for PTI leader Aslam Iqbal in relation to the 9 May cases. Iqbal is PTI’s candidate for the post of Chief Minister of Punjab, facing PML-N’s Maryam Nawaz.
PTI founder Imran Khan has been in jail since August last year and was recently sentenced to 31 years in jail in three cases. There are more than 200 cases against him in total.
