President Draupadi Murmu awarded Honorary Doctorate by Civil Law University of Mauritius

President Draupadi Murmu, who is currently on a three-day visit to Mauritius, was conferred the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law by the University of Mauritius on Tuesday. Sharing the news on Instagram, she said she felt honored to receive the degree. She further wrote that she hopes “it will inspire all youth, especially young women, to discover their unique passions and pursue their dreams”.

President Murmu also addressed universities in Mauritius and urged them to “remain engaged with India to nurture its glorious past and invest in its bright future”, the Ministry of External Affairs said.

During his visit, President Murmu gifted a RuPay card to the country’s Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth. RuPay card was recently launched in Mauritius.

The two leaders also held talks during a meeting aimed at strengthening the countries’ bilateral relations. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the objective of the meeting was to discuss ways to provide further impetus to the historic and deep-rooted India-Mauritius partnership.

President Murmu was received with full state honors by Prime Minister Jugnauth of Mauritius on his arrival, reflecting the “special gesture reflecting the exceptionally close relations between India and Mauritius”, the Ministry of External Affairs said.

She will grace the Mauritius National Day as the chief guest and will become the sixth Indian President to do so since 2000. A contingent of the Indian Navy will also participate in the country’s National Day celebrations with two ships CGS Sarathi and INS Tir. President Murmu is also scheduled to meet the Chief Justice of the Mauritius Supreme Court, the Speaker of the Mauritius National Assembly and other important leaders during the three-day visit.

The Ministry of External Affairs said President Murmu will also inaugurate 14 India-assisted projects, demonstrating the growing breadth and multi-dimensional nature of India’s partnership with Mauritius. The ministry also said that his visit underlines the long-term and enduring relations between the two countries and reaffirms their continued commitment towards strengthening bilateral relations in all areas.
