Russian President Putin’s critic and opposition leader Alexei Navalny dies in prison. The cause of death is being investigated
Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny died in an Arctic prison colony on Friday, Russia’s Federal Penitentiary Service said in a statement. Navalny, who is serving a 19-year sentence, was a prominent critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
According to the Federal Penitentiary Service of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District, Navalny “felt unwell” after the walk and “almost immediately lost consciousness”.
“After the walk, Navalny felt bad, he almost immediately lost consciousness. Medical staff arrived immediately and an ambulance team was called. Resuscitation measures were taken, which did not yield positive results. Paramedics confirmed the death of the convict,” the statement said.
The cause of death has not been known yet.
