Top US general warns it would be “difficult” to defend Israel in a war with Hezbollah, as Iran vows harsh response

On June 23, a US military official warned that any Israeli military strike in Lebanon would risk an Iranian response in defense of Hezbollah. Air Force Gen. CQ Brown, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Iran “would be more inclined to support Hezbollah.” He said Tehran supports Hamas but would give Hezbollah more support “if they felt it was threatened.” Brown also said the US continues to talk with Israeli leaders and warned against widening the conflict. He said a key message is “to think about the second-order impact of any type of operation in Lebanon, and how that could happen.” Pentagon officials have said Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin also raised concerns about a widening conflict when he spoke to his Israeli counterpart recently.
