Bogota Colombia:

On Tuesday, an American man was sentenced in Bogota to 42 years in prison for the murder of a famous Colombian DJ; the case sparked international outrage from women’s rights activists.

John Nelson Paulos was arrested in Panama in January 2023 while on the run from Colombian authorities for the murder of 23-year-old Valentina Trespalacios, whom he had been dating for about a year.

Prosecutors said he beat and choked her “out of jealousy.”

Security camera footage showed Poulos leaving his apartment pushing a cart with a large suitcase containing Trespalacios’ body.

His body was later found in a dustbin.

Last year, the Colombian Femicide Observatory, an NGO, recorded 612 femicides in the country, while the government recorded only 100.

Since 2015, femicide has become a separate crime in Colombia.
