A fire was reported in a residential building in Nanjing city of eastern China.

At least 15 people were killed and 44 injured in a fire at a residential building in Nanjing, eastern China, local authorities said Saturday.

The fire broke out on Friday morning, officials said at a press conference, adding that preliminary investigations showed the fire started on the first floor of the building, where electric bikes were kept.

The fire broke out in the Yuhuatai district of Nanjing, a city of more than eight million located about 260 kilometers northwest of Shanghai.

Officials said it was extinguished by 6:00 am (2200 GMT) and search and rescue operations ended around 02:00 pm (0600 GMT) on Friday.

He said that 44 injured people have been sent to the hospital for treatment.
