Black man dies after US police kneel on his neck

Officers pinned Tyson to the ground and handcuffed him.

Ohio police released video of a Black man who died at a local hospital after repeatedly telling officers “I can’t breathe” as they pinned him to the bar floor and handcuffed him, leading to In 2020, memories of the murder of George Floyd became fresh.

In body camera video released Thursday by the Canton Police Department, officers are seen arresting the man, identified as 53-year-old Frank Tyson, who was charged with leaving the scene of a car accident on April 18. There was doubt.

The Canton Police Department was not immediately available to comment on the video, which was posted online by several local media outlets, or to confirm details about the incident.

The 36-minute clip begins with a patrol officer coming upon a car that had crashed into a power pole and a bystander telling him that the driver of the vehicle had fled to a nearby inn.

Officers are then seen entering the establishment, where they find Tyson standing at the bar. When they attempted to grab his weapon, a struggle ensued and he repeatedly yelled “they’re trying to kill me” and “call the sheriff.”

Officers forced Tyson to the ground and handcuffed him. One of them is seen placing a knee on his back near his neck for about 30 seconds.

Tyson can be heard repeatedly saying, “I can’t breathe. I can’t move my neck,” while an officer yells “calm down” and “you’re OK” before standing up.

The next video shows Tyson lying motionless, face down, on the floor for about six minutes while officers talk to bar patrons.

Officers then check on Tyson, who appears to be unresponsive. They can be heard asking, “Is he breathing?” and “Does he have a pulse?”

Eight minutes after officers handcuffed Tyson, he removed the handcuffs and began CPR. The video shows paramedics then arrive at the scene and carry Tyson out of the bar on a stretcher and into a waiting ambulance.

Tyson died at a local hospital, according to NBC affiliate WKYC in Cleveland. Reuters could not immediately confirm the report. The official cause of death has not been determined.

The incident was reminiscent of Floyd’s fatal encounter with Minneapolis police four years ago. A cellphone video of Floyd’s killing, which went viral, sparked a wave of worldwide protests against police brutality and racism.

It shows Derek Chauvin, a white officer, kneeling on Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes while Floyd, who was Black, begged for his life, repeating “I can’t breathe” before being silenced. Used to be.

Chauvin and his three fellow officers were ultimately convicted of murder and other crimes.

The Canton Police Department officers involved in the Tyson incident were identified as Beau Schoenege and Camden Burch, WKYC reports.

The station reported that both were placed on administrative leave and that the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (OCI) is investigating the incident.

Calls to OCI were not immediately returned.
