Chinese fighter jets shadow US spy plane over Taiwan, hours after defense chiefs’ talks

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke to his Chinese counterpart Dong Jun on April 16 for the first time in nearly 18 months. The video conference between the two defense ministers followed a war of words earlier this month over US-led naval exercises in the disputed South China Sea. US President Joe Biden also hosted his counterparts from Japan and the Philippines on April 11, which had angered China. However, the US also wants to maintain lines of communication with Beijing to prevent tensions from getting out of control. Just hours after the talks between Austin and Dong, China deployed jets to engage US naval aircraft flying over the Taiwan Strait. Watch the video to find out more.
