Israeli soldiers kill 2 Palestinian gunmen who opened fire on them in the West Bank

Jenin, West Bank:

Israeli troops killed two Palestinian gunmen who fired at them from a vehicle in the occupied West Bank, the army said on Saturday.

The army released a photo of two automatic rifles it said several gunmen used to fire at soldiers at a checkpoint near the flashpoint in the Palestinian city of Jenin.

The Jenin Brigade, an umbrella group that includes armed groups such as Islamic Jihad and Hamas, said the two gunmen were its members.

There was no immediate comment from Palestinian officials in the West Bank, where violence is rising as Israel pushes for war against the Palestinian group Hamas in Gaza.

Israel launched its offensive into Gaza after a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, in which Israel said 1,200 people were killed and 253 taken hostage. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, more than 34,000 Palestinians have been killed so far and much of the population has been displaced.

Violence in the West Bank, which was already increasing before the war, has flared up with an increase in Israeli raids and Palestinian street attacks.

The West Bank and Gaza, which Israel captured in the 1967 war, are among the territories Palestinians are demanding a state. US-brokered peace talks collapsed a decade ago.
