Joe Biden announces new sanctions on Russia ahead of second anniversary of Ukraine war

“Two years after the war, the Ukrainian people are still fighting with tremendous courage.”

US President Joe Biden announced on Friday that Washington will issue more than 500 new sanctions targeting Russia as the United States seeks to increase pressure on Moscow to mark the second anniversary of its war in Ukraine.

The United States will also impose new export sanctions on nearly 100 entities accused of providing aid to Russia and take action to further reduce Russia’s energy revenues, Biden said in a statement.

Biden said the moves seek to hold Russia accountable for the war and the death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, as Washington seeks to continue supporting Ukraine even as it faces severe ammunition shortages and US military aid has been delayed in Congress for months. ,

Biden said of the sanctions, “They will ensure that Putin pays an even greater price for his aggression abroad and repression at home.”

He said Friday’s measures would target individuals linked to Navalny’s imprisonment, as well as Russia’s financial sector, defense industrial base, procurement networks and sanctions evaders on several continents.

The sanctions are the latest of thousands of targets announced by the United States and its allies following Russia’s February 24, 2022 invasion of Ukraine, which killed thousands and destroyed cities.

“Two years after this war, the Ukrainian people are still fighting with tremendous courage. But they are running out of ammunition. Ukraine needs more supplies from the United States in the fight against Russia’s continued attacks , which is likely from arms and ammunition from Iran and North Korea,” Biden said.

“That’s why the House of Representatives must pass a bipartisan national security supplemental bill before it’s too late.”
