Museums to Visit in California This Year

happy Monday.

The New York Times published a special section on museums over the weekend, featuring more than two dozen articles on how institutions across the country are trying to offer their visitors more to see, do and feel.

I highly recommend browsing the entire series. One of the articles covers ways in which museums are making better use of their outdoor spaces; The second highlights a museum dedicated to the history and science of nuclear weapons; and profiles a joint show set up by two museums on each side of the US-Mexico border.

There’s also a long list of American museums to visit this year, including several museums on the West Coast, as well as a guide to new and exciting museum programs for kids.

And, of course, there is a lot going on in the art world in California. Here are some of the highlights:

  • The Broad in Los Angeles An extensive exhibition will open on May 25 that will feature 20 years of work by Mickalene Thomas, an artist who was exploring the Black female figure even before it became so popular.

“It’s hard to understand where we are now, how revolutionary his work was when I first showed it,” Los Angeles gallerist Suzanne Vielmetter, who gave Thomas her first solo show in 2007, tells my colleague Robin Pogrebin. told. “I can’t think of a single artist at that time who was depicting female black figures from the perspective of female desire.”

15-year-old Ivy Nguyen was recently honored for saving a teenage boy from drowning. He was presented a letter of recognition from the city of Santa Ana.

Last summer, she performed CPR on a friend who had fainted in the pool. She relied on the first aid training she received as a Girl Scout, she said.

“It kind of showed me another side of me,” Ivy told KABC-TV. “I can really do what’s right and stand up and do the right thing, even when I’m under pressure.”

Thanks for reading. I will come back tomorrow. -Soumya
