Navy helps Panama-flagged crude oil tanker carrying 22 Indians after Houthi missile attack

Iran-backed Houthi militants fired three anti-ship ballistic missiles into the Red Sea near the merchant ships Maisha and MV Andromeda Star off Yemen.

The latest incident comes amid growing global concerns over attacks on various commercial vessels in the Red Sea by Houthi terrorists.

An Indian naval destroyer rescued a Panama-flagged crude oil tanker with 30 crew members, including 22 Indians, on board after it came under missile attack by Houthi militants, the country’s navy said on Sunday. The country’s Navy said on Sunday.

INS Kochi responded to the attack on ship MV Andromeda Star on April 26 and all crew members are safe, officials said. The incident comes after the Indian Navy provided assistance to several merchant ships following attacks on them in the western Indian Ocean in recent days.

“Indian Naval destroyer INS Kochi was deployed on a mission to respond to a maritime security incident involving the attack on Panama-flagged crude oil tanker MV Andromeda Star on 26 April,” the Indian Navy said. It said the ship was intercepted by an Indian Navy ship and an aerial reconnaissance, including helicopter operations, was conducted to assess the situation.

A Naval Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was also deployed to conduct a “residual risk assessment”, the Navy said in a statement. “A total of 30 crew, including 22 Indian nationals, are reported safe and the ship is continuing its scheduled transit to the next port,” it said.

“The prompt action by the Indian Naval ship reiterates the commitment and resolve of the Indian Navy in protecting the sailors transiting through the area,” it said. The latest incident comes amid growing global concerns over attacks on various commercial ships in the Red Sea by Houthi militants.
