Refuting Iran’s massive missile attack on Israel: 10 points

Iranian drones and cruise missiles successfully intercepted

New Delhi:
The unprecedented Iranian missile and drone attack on Israel, and the Israeli missile defense shield’s ability to absorb 99 percent of weapons fired at it, is one of the most remarkable technological achievements in the history of warfare.

Here are some details of what we know:

  1. 300 missiles or drones were fired against Israel.

  2. This includes 170 drones, 120 ballistic missiles and 30 cruise missiles.

  3. All drones and cruise missiles were successfully intercepted.

  4. Nearly 50 percent of ballistic missiles fired by Iran failed to launch or crashed before reaching their targets.

  5. The Institute for the Study of War says, “The missile-drone attack on Israel was intended to cause significant damage below the range, which could have provoked a large-scale Israeli response.” So the question arises whether Iran had planned the attack to prevent retaliation?

  6. The strike package was based on packages that the Russians have used repeatedly against Ukraine to great effect.

  7. But while Ukrainian air defenses have averaged only a 46 percent interception rate of Russian ballistic missiles, the Israelis and their allies have shot down 99 percent.

  8. The strike rate was well below Iranian expectations, clearly indicating a lack of effectiveness of Israeli shields.

  9. But at the same time, now knowing about the capabilities of the Israeli system, the Iranians may be able to plan more effective attacks in the future. So will future Iranian attacks be more effective and successful?

  10. World leaders have urged peace and Israel’s top ally the US has called on Israel to refrain from a military response, at a time when the region is already in turmoil over the Gaza war.
