Sydney:

Two people were killed when a plane crashed into Mount Beauty in the Australian state of Victoria on Saturday, police said.

Located in the northeast of the state, Mount Beauty is a small town surrounded by Alpine National Park, which features lakes, forests and snow fields, Xinhua news agency reported.

It is believed the pair were flying over Embankment Drive when the plane went down at around 1:45pm local time. Both the pilot and passenger died at the scene, whose identities are yet to be formally confirmed.

According to Victoria Police, he was the only person on board the plane and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

A statement from the state’s Country Fire Authority (CFA) indicated that the crashed aircraft was a “powered glider”.

“The incident was considered under control at 2:13 pm and deemed safe at 3:34 pm. Emergency service crews will remain at the scene for a significant period of time,” the CFA said.
