Easter Sunday: From Easter eggs to hot cross buns – here are 5 delicious dishes to prepare for family and friends

Easter Sunday, also known as Resurrection Day, is one of the primary festivals of the Christian Church and commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after his crucifixion. Christians around the world celebrate Easter as a joyous occasion. The day marks the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies and the revelation of God’s plan for the salvation of humanity.

During Easter Sunday, families gather for feasts, and churches hold special services. The tradition of Easter eggs, widely celebrated during this season, symbolizes rebirth and new life.

Here are some recipes to prepare during Easter Sunday

1. Easter Egg: Preparing Easter eggs is a cherished tradition, with each home having its own set of recipes. It is made using marzipan or an egg-shaped mold. Some people also fry eggs by dipping them in gram flour batter to begin with. For a simple but delightful Easter egg, start by melting chocolate and pouring it into an egg-shaped mold. These chocolate eggs can then be decorated with decorations like fondant or sugar flowers as well as colorful silk ribbon, which adds a personalized touch.

2. Caramel Custard: For delicious caramel custard, gather these basic ingredients: milk, sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract. First of all, boil 1 liter milk in a saucepan and add one and a half cup sugar in it, however keep 1 tablespoon of it aside for preparing the caramel. Once the milk has cooled, beat four eggs and add them to the milk along with 1 teaspoon vanilla essence. Now prepare caramel by heating 1 tablespoon sugar until it melts and turns brown. Pour the milk mixture over the caramel and steam until it sets. To check whether it is cooked or not, insert a knife to make sure it does not stick. Let it cool and keep it in the refrigerator. Turn this pudding over on a plate as the caramel side with the brown side should be on top. Serve chilled and enjoy.

3. Cross Buns: To prepare, start by mixing 3 cups of whole wheat flour with 3 and a half tablespoons of sugar, a pinch of salt, a little nutmeg powder and cinnamon powder in a bowl. Activate the yeast and add it to the mixture along with 30 grams of butter. Knead the dough with milk until it reaches the desired consistency, then set it aside for 30 minutes to an hour to rise. – Knead the dough again and you can add raisins or tutti frutti to it as per your taste. Now cut the dough, divide it into small round pieces and place it on a baking tray. For the cross on top of each bun, in a separate bowl, mix the flour with water to form a thick batter. Transfer the thick batter into a piping bag or cone and make crosses on the dough balls. Bake the buns in a preheated oven at 180 degrees Celsius for 15 to 20 minutes. Now you can enjoy your freshly baked hot cross buns!

4. Mashed Potatoes: Holiday lunch or dinner is incomplete without the comforting presence of mashed potatoes. To prepare this delicious recipe, you will need potatoes depending on the number of servings. Peel potatoes, cut into cubes and boil. Once done, drain the water and mash the potatoes with the help of a masher. For extra smooth texture, strain the mashed potatoes into a bowl using a strainer. Now add butter, chopped garlic (optional), milk in a saucepan and let it cook. Then add the buttermilk mixture to the mashed potatoes and mix well. For a finishing touch, you can also garnish the mashed potatoes with parsley or coriander leaves.

5. Mutton Kheema: Easter feast is incomplete without mutton kheema. Take 1 kg minced mutton and add curd, salt, turmeric, red chilli powder, coriander leaves, ginger garlic chilli paste and mint leaves, marinate it and keep aside. For better flavor, consider marinating the kheema overnight. – Pour oil in a saucepan, add 3-4 finely chopped onions and let it cook until it turns golden brown. – After this add ginger garlic paste, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, Kashmiri red chilli powder, mix and let it cook. If the masala is sticking to the pan then add some hot water. Now add 2 chopped tomatoes and salt and let it become soft. Cook on low flame for 10-12 minutes. To cook kheema, take a pressure cooker, add oil, whole spices like cumin, cloves, black pepper, green cardamom and add the kheema marinated with onion masala. There is no need to add water as the mutton will release its water. Pressure cook till 4-5 whistles. – When the pressure cooker cools down, open it and garnish the kheema with chopped green coriander. You can enjoy this kheema with pav or paratha.
