Uttar Pradesh: Jailed gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari passes away

Jailed gangster turned leader Mukhtar Ansari He died of a heart attack on Thursday at Banda Medical College in Uttar Pradesh, the college principal said.

Earlier in the day, Ansari was taken to hospital after his health deteriorated, his lawyer said.

Banda Medical College principal Sunil Kaushal confirmed to PTI that Ansari died of a heart attack at the hospital.

On Tuesday, he was admitted to the hospital for about 14 hours after complaining of stomach ache.

60-year-old Mukhtar Ansari is a five-time former MLA from Mau Sadar seat and has been behind the bars in UP and Punjab since 2005. More than 60 criminal cases are pending against him. He was sentenced by various courts of UP in eight cases from September 2022 and was lodged in Banda jail.

His name was in the list of 66 gangsters issued by the Uttar Pradesh Police Last year.

Earlier, his brother and Ghazipur MP Afzal Ansari, who reached the hospital, alleged that he was poisoned in jail.
