45 killed, 1 injured in bus accident in South Africa

South Africa’s transport department said on Thursday that at least 45 people were killed and one person seriously injured in a bus crash near Mamatlakala in the northern province of Limpopo.

According to the statement, the ministry alleged that the driver lost control and collided with the barriers on the bridge, causing the bus to go over the bridge and hit the ground, where it caught fire.

It said the passenger bus was carrying people from Botswana, a landlocked country in southern Africa, to Moria, a town in Limpopo.

Limpopo’s transport department said in a separate statement that rescue operations continued late Thursday evening as some bodies were burnt beyond recognition, with others trapped inside the debris and scattered at the scene.
