5 killed, 33 injured as tornado hits Guangzhou, China: report

Five people were killed and 33 injured in a tornado that hit the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou, state news agency Xinhua quoted local officials as saying on Saturday.

The tornado struck the city’s Baiyun district on Saturday afternoon, damaging 141 factory buildings but not collapsing any residential houses, the report said.

Rescue workers from the city’s emergency management, weather, fire, waterworks and health departments, as well as local residents, were dispatched to the area, Xinhua said, adding that search and rescue operations there had been completed.

Earlier this week, at least four people were killed, while hundreds and thousands of others were forced to relocate from their homes. Heavy rain fell in southern China Deadly flooding occurred in the area over the weekend.
